Brief Background of Borough Hall

All Car Rent-A-Car New York City discount car rentals have compiled a few notable dates that were key in the history of Borough Hall.

Before 1898, the present Borough Hall was Brooklyn’s City Hall.

In 1836, this hall’s cornerstone was laid. However, the structure was not completed until 1849 due to financial difficulties.

On February 26, 1895, Borough Hall, which was the home to the Mayor and Common Council of the City of Brooklyn, a lighted gas jet in a small, third-floor closet filled with waste paper caused a fire. As a result, the fire destroyed the bell tower and the clock. The top floor of the building was gutted and the walls and ceiling of the Common Council chamber suffered water damage.

In January 1898, the Independent City of Brooklyn was consolidated into the City of New York and Kings County became the Borough of Brooklyn. Borough Hall was redesigned, repaired and reconfigured as a courthouse for a courthouse and for the Appellate Division, Second Division.

In 1902, the old Common Council chamber was converted into a courtroom.

The Brooklyn Eagle Building

Take your New York City discount car rentals vehicle to Washington and Johnson Streets, where you’ll find the old Brooklyn Eagle Building – the newspaper office. Originally founded in 1841 by a group of Democrats, the late mayor Henry C. Murphy served as the newspaper’s editor.

Poet Walt Whitman was the editor from 1846 to 1848. In his position, he wasn’t shy about his opposition of the extension of slave states. In fact, his position forced him out of his position prematurely. Whitman then joined the radical Brooklyn Freeman staff.

St. James Pro-Cathedral

The first Roman Catholic church built on Long Island (1822) is located at Jay Street and Cathedral Place. All Car Rent-A-Car New York City discount car rentals say this red-brick structure is built in High Renaissance style. Nearby the church is one of the oldest Catholic burial grounds on Long Island. Seventy Catholics organized the parish under Peter Turner’s leadership.

Brooklyn Academy of Music

Founded in 1859, this performing arts centre was opened in 1861. The academy moved its neo-Italianate building to downtown Brooklyn in 1907. The Academy has four performance arenas – the Playhouse, the Opera House, the Leperg space, and the BAM Rose Cinemas.
