A History Worth Remembering

Forest Park is a place with a lot of memorable moments and a great story behind it. Up until the late 19th century, it was inhabited by many various owners. Brooklyn officials were then in search of an area that could be used as place for a public park. On August 9, 1895, a momentous occasion occurred; the Brooklyn Parks Department bought a piece of land that would end up becoming Forest Park. They originally decided to call it Brooklyn Forest Park but changed the name when it was acquired by the city of New York in general. The surveyor of the park was Frederick Law Olmstead and he also planned the Forest Park Drive. The park was divided by many transportation lines, including the Long Island Rail Road, the Rockaway Line and the Montauk Line. The Montauk Line is the only one that still runs currently but Woodhaven Boulevard and the Jackie Robinson Parkway also separate the park.
